Artificial Intelligence Policy

Purpose and Scope

GENIUS: Indonesian Journal of Early Childhood Education, published by the Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training (FTIK), Universitas Islam Negeri Kiai Haji Achmad Siddiq Jember, recognizes the growing use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and generative AI technologies, including large language models (LLMs), in academic research and scholarly publishing.

This policy is established to ensure that the use of AI technologies within the journal’s publication process is conducted responsibly, transparently, ethically, and in accordance with international standards of research integrity and publication ethics, including recommendations from the Committee on Publication Ethics, DOAJ, and Scopus.

Principles of Responsible AI Use

The journal adopts the following principles regarding the use of AI technologies:

1. Human Responsibility and Accountability

Authors, reviewers, and editors remain fully responsible for the accuracy, originality, integrity, and ethical standards of all scholarly content. AI tools cannot assume responsibility or accountability for published work.

2. Transparency

Any use of AI tools during manuscript preparation, data analysis, language editing, or publication processes must be transparently disclosed.

3. Academic Integrity and Originality

AI technologies must not compromise the originality, validity, reliability, or scholarly integrity of research and academic writing.

4. Non-Authorship of AI Tools

AI tools, including generative AI systems and chatbots, cannot be listed as authors or co-authors under any circumstances because they cannot take legal or ethical responsibility for scholarly work.

Permitted Uses of Artificial Intelligence

Authors may use AI tools only as supportive instruments for limited purposes, including but not limited to:

  1. Language editing and proofreading
    Improving grammar, spelling, clarity, readability, and academic writing style.
  2. Reference management and citation formatting
    Assisting in organizing references and formatting citations using AI-supported reference management software.
  3. Plagiarism and similarity checking
    Conducting originality screening before manuscript submission.
  4. Data organisation and analytical assistance
    Supporting data management, statistical analysis, coding assistance, visualization, or transcription, provided that interpretation and scholarly judgment remain entirely the responsibility of the authors.
  5. Translation assistance
    Assisting non-native English-speaking authors in improving linguistic accessibility without altering the scholarly substance of the manuscript.

The use of AI tools must not replace substantial intellectual contribution from human authors.

Prohibited Uses of Artificial Intelligence

The following uses of AI technologies are strictly prohibited:

  1. Generation of core scholarly content
    Including the automatic generation of research questions, hypotheses, theoretical frameworks, methodologies, analyses, discussions, or conclusions without substantial human intellectual contribution.
  2. Fabrication or falsification of research data
    Including manipulated data, fabricated citations, non-existent references, or misleading research findings.
  3. Undisclosed AI-generated content
    Failure to disclose material AI assistance in manuscript preparation constitutes unethical conduct.
  4. AI-based ghostwriting or automated authorship
    Manuscripts must represent genuine scholarly work conducted by the listed authors.
  5. Manipulation of peer review or editorial processes
    The use of AI for unethical interference in editorial communication, reviewer identity fabrication, or peer-review manipulation is strictly forbidden.

Any violation of these provisions may constitute publication malpractice and ethical misconduct.

Disclosure Requirements

To maintain transparency in scholarly communication, authors must clearly disclose any use of AI technologies in the manuscript.

Authors are required to:

  1. Provide an AI disclosure statement in the Acknowledgements section or a dedicated statement within the manuscript.
  2. Specify:
    • The name of the AI tool or software used
    • The version (if applicable)
    • The specific purpose for which the tool was used
  3. Confirm that AI tools were not used to generate the manuscript’s primary intellectual contributions.

Example of Disclosure Statement

“The authors used AI-assisted language editing software to improve grammar and readability. All interpretations, analyses, and conclusions remain entirely the responsibility of the authors.”

Failure to disclose significant AI use may result in manuscript rejection, correction requests, or retraction after publication.

Ethical and Legal Responsibilities

Authors must ensure that the use of AI technologies complies with:

  • Academic integrity standards
  • Research ethics principles
  • Copyright and intellectual property regulations
  • Data privacy and confidentiality requirements

Any AI-assisted content involving plagiarism, copyright infringement, fabricated information, or ethical misconduct will be handled according to the journal’s Publication Ethics and Malpractice Policy.

Editorial and Peer Review Policy

All manuscripts submitted to GENIUS: Indonesian Journal of Early Childhood Education undergo the same rigorous editorial screening and double-blind peer review process regardless of AI involvement.

Editors and reviewers may evaluate:

  • The appropriateness of AI usage
  • Transparency of disclosure
  • Potential ethical concerns related to AI-assisted content

The use of AI tools does not influence editorial decisions and does not reduce the standards of originality, scientific rigor, or publication ethics applied by the journal.

Editors and reviewers are also expected to maintain confidentiality and are discouraged from uploading unpublished manuscripts into generative AI systems that may compromise data security or intellectual property rights.

Compliance and Sanctions

Violation of this AI Policy may result in one or more of the following actions:

  1. Manuscript rejection
  2. Requests for revision or clarification
  3. Retraction or correction of published articles
  4. Temporary or permanent submission restrictions
  5. Notification to affiliated institutions in cases of serious ethical misconduct

Policy Review and Updates

This policy may be periodically reviewed and updated to align with developments in artificial intelligence technologies, scholarly publishing standards, and recommendations issued by the Committee on Publication Ethics, DOAJ, and Scopus.
